Embrace the Rain: Santa Cruz’s Indoor Escapades
Santa Cruz, nestled in the heart of Guanacaste Province, is a vibrant tapestry of culture, nature, and adventure. While the weekend forecast promises a dance of raindrops and overcast skies, it also sets the stage for a unique exploration of this tropical paradise. As the rain taps gently on the rooftops, it’s the perfect time to dive into the indoor and covered adventures that Santa Cruz has to offer.
Start your day with the Cavern Tour adventure, a morning escapade that takes you deep into the ancient caves of Guanacaste. Available from 6:15 AM to 10:45 AM, this tour is a journey through time, exploring caverns formed over 60 million years. As you descend into the depths, the stalagmites and stalactites tell stories of the earth’s ancient past. The tour is not just about the caves; it’s a full sensory experience. The sounds of the jungle, the cool touch of the cave walls, and the sight of wildlife like capuchin monkeys and howler monkeys make it an unforgettable adventure. One recent review from February 2023 captures the essence perfectly:
Hike steep, cave deep…fun day - Our driver was really good at telling us about Costa Rica. He even made a decision for us that leaving earlier in the morning would be better as it gets pretty hot for the hike. The trail at the beginning is just gravel and pretty steep. It levels off. I would suggest that a shuttle up to the one area would make it more enjoyable for those a bit older. In some reviews it says to wear long pants and long sleeve shirts. Not necessary. Again our driver was helpful to tell us just take water. Side note- you need more water. Now the caves. They are cool. Well not cool temps. It still was pretty warm. Our guide was really great. It was a bit slippery in the caves. The guide is very good at safety first.
Lastly the communication from Viator and the driver were down right perfect. So the review doesn’t really say anything bad, nothing bad for Viator, but hike was not explained well by Barra Honda and the guide taken us to the cave did not speak English. We are in Costa Rica so that is on us, but we asked for a english speaking guide so that was our only knock.
Thrills and Spills: Off-Road Adventures
For those who crave a bit of adrenaline, the Off-Road Adventure is a must. Available from 7:30 AM to 10:30 AM, this tour takes you on a thrilling ride through the lush landscapes of Guanacaste. As you navigate the off-road trails, the rain adds an extra layer of excitement, turning the paths into a muddy playground. The tour winds through vibrant tropical forests and along stunning coastal views, offering glimpses of Costa Rica’s diverse wildlife. From playful monkeys to sunbathing iguanas, the journey is a feast for the senses. A review from February 2025 highlights the experience:
The best ATV adventure in Tamarindo - From start to finish, this was absolutely the best ATV experience ever! I love doing ATV excursions when I travel, and this one exceeded all expectations. JP made us feel like family right away, adding a personal and welcoming touch to the adventure. The ATVs were in great condition, and the ride itself was everything you could want—thrilling, scenic, and unforgettable. If you’re in Tamarindo and looking for an ATV adventure, Mantaraya Adventures is the only way to go! Highly recommend!
