Often referred to as The Hidden Gem, this is a cemetery favored by the locals! Once a plantation, it now spreads across 67 acres and is Savannah’s most preserved, gothic, and untouched graveyard that reached its peak during the Victorian Age. It boasts a plethora of uniquely stylized mausoleum chapels, genuine Civil War sections that include notable Gettysburg heroes, and is home to the city’s most ornate and decorative ironwork fences. The cemetery was deemed the most accommodating of all cemeteries, welcoming everyone from the city’s affluent to the Stranger’s Lot, Jewish section, slave section, and Babyland, accurately reflecting the city’s close-knit community. The roll call of individuals includes the founder of Girl Scouts, Juliette Low, ‘Jingle Bells’ author, James Pierpont, Savannah’s first greeter, The Waving Girl, ironclad shipbuilder, Henry Willink, and author Kahlil Gibran’s patron, Mary Haskell. Great Women’s History is found here. On most days, our tour is the only group of inhabitants found in the cemetery, providing a very private atmosphere!
