Umbwe Gate (1614m) – Umbwe Cave Camp (2850m)
Mount Kilimanjaro - Hiking duration: 6 Hours
Distance: Approximately 10.3 km
Habitat: Forest (Montane)
Following breakfast, the journey begins with a drive to the Machame gate for registration. From there, a transfer to the Umbwe Gate (1641m) takes place, passing through charming villages with coffee and banana plantations. The air is humid, and the path is often muddy. Initially, the route follows a forestry track winding through the lush rainforest. It then narrows and steepens, climbing the ridge between the Lonzo and Umbwe rivers, surrounded by towering trees. The path offers breathtaking views of deep gorges and, if fortunate, glimpses of Kilimanjaro rising in the distance. The camp is nestled among large trees and dense undergrowth. Enjoy dinner and an overnight stay at the Umbwe Cave Camp (2850m).
Umbwe Cave Camp (2850m) – Barranco Camp (3985m)
Mount Kilimanjaro - Hiking duration: 6 hours
Distance: Approximately 6.3 km
Habitat: Moorland
Shortly after departing the camp, the forest begins to thin, giving way to rockier terrain, sparse undergrowth, and moss-covered trees. The path continues along a narrow but stunning ridge. As the altitude increases, Kilimanjaro can be seen majestically ahead, silhouetted against the blue sky. The path levels out as it approaches Barranco Valley.
From the Umbwe ridge, the route descends slightly to Barranco Camp. The camp is located in the valley below the Breach and Great Barranco Wall, offering a memorable sunset while dinner is prepared.
Barranco Camp (3985m) – Karanga Camp (4040m)
Mount Kilimanjaro - Hiking duration: 6 hours
Distance: Approximately 6 km
Habitat: Moorland / Semi-desert
After a night at the impressive Barranco Wall, the journey continues up this formidable obstacle, which often proves easier than expected. Reaching just below the Heim Glacier, the beauty of Kilimanjaro is truly appreciated. The route then descends through the Karanga Valley, crossing ridges and valleys, and joins the Mweka route. This is the preferred descent route from the summit, so take note. The last water stop is at Karanga Valley, as there is no water available at Barafu Camp. Enjoy dinner and an overnight stay at Karanga Camp.
Karanga Camp (4040m) – Barafu Camp (4681m)
Mount Kilimanjaro - Hiking duration: 4 hours
Distance: Approximately 3.4 km
Habitat: Alpine desert
After breakfast at Karanga Camp, the route ascends 640m towards Barafu Camp. “Barafu” means “ice” in Swahili, and it is a stark and inhospitable camping area.
Exposed to constant winds, tents are pitched on a narrow, rocky ridge. Familiarize yourself with the terrain before dark to avoid accidents.
The summit is 1214m higher, and the final ascent begins the same night. Prepare equipment, hiking poles, and thermal clothing for the summit attempt. Replace headlamp and camera batteries, and carry spares. To prevent freezing, use a thermal flask for water. Go to bed early to rest and sleep.
Summit Attempt, Barafu Camp (4681m) – Uhuru Peak (5895m) – Mweka (3090m)
Mount Kilimanjaro - Hiking duration: 7 to 8 hours to reach Uhuru Peak, 6 to 8 hours to descend to Mweka Camp
Distance: Approximately 4.5 km ascent and 10.8 km descent
Habitat: Stone scree and ice-capped summit
The ascent begins around 23:20, with tea and biscuits before setting off into the night.
Heading northwest, the climb ascends through heavy scree to Stella Point on the crater rim.
For many, the 6-hour trek to Stella Point is the most mentally and physically challenging part of the route.
At Stella Point (5739m), a short rest is taken, rewarded by a magnificent sunrise (weather permitting).
From Stella Point, snow is usually encountered on the 2-hour ascent to Uhuru Peak.
Time spent on the summit depends on weather conditions.
Do not linger too long, as cold and fatigue make it difficult to resume.
Celebrate the achievement and cherish the memory!
The descent to Barafu from the summit takes about 3 hours.
A brief rest and gear collection occur before heading to Mweka Hut (3090m).
The route is straightforward, descending through rock and scree into moorland and eventually forest.
The camp is in the upper forest, where mist or rain may occur in the late afternoon.
Dinner and washing water are provided.
Mweka Camp (3090m) – Mweka Gate (1641m)
Mount Kilimanjaro - Hiking duration: 4 to 6 hours
Habitat: Forest
Distance: Approximately 8.5 km
After a well-deserved breakfast, a scenic 4 to 6-hour hike leads back to the Park gate. Some hikers may experience knee issues, potentially extending the descent.
It is advised not to tip porters until all gear has safely reached the gate. Visit the tips page for more information.
At Mweka Gate, climbers sign a register and successful climbers receive summit certificates. Those reaching Stella Point (5739m) receive green certificates, while those reaching Uhuru Peak (5895m) receive gold certificates.
From Mweka Gate, a 3 km (1 hour) hike leads to Mweka Village, often muddy. In the village, a delicious hot lunch is served. After lunch, return to Moshi for a long-awaited hot shower, dinner, and celebrations!
