- Sterkfontein Cave - The Sterkfontein Caves are located on the edge of the Cradle of Humankind, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in South Africa. In 1949, R. Broom discovered the skull of “Mrs. Ples,” Plesianthropus transvaalensis, a member of the Australopithecus africanus family (the early apes of Africa). This indicates that hominids roamed the area around 3 million years ago. Due to natural catastrophic events, species underwent significant changes. Evolution led to the emergence of Homo robustus, H. erectus, H. habilis, and Homo sapiens (the species to which humans belong). During this time, Pangea split into Gondwana and Laurasia, requiring species to adapt to new environments.
Although this is largely theoretical, the search for the missing link continues. Visit the Cradle and see if you might make a discovery.
- Maropeng Visitor Centre - “Maropeng” is a Setswana word meaning “home,” the place of our origin. In English, the phrase “there’s no place like home” is expressed by Batswana as “Maropeng go a boela.” This exhibition center offers fascinating insights into Mrs. Ples and human evolution.
Experience the lifestyle of the hominids. The Tumulus represents the caves where hominids lived, using naturally occurring fire to warm themselves during the winter months. Explore the elements of natural phenomena, including the formation of Earth, ice, wind, fire, and earth. View replicas of several fossils discovered in the area surrounding the Cradle of Humankind, and if you’re fortunate, you might even see some real fossils.
- Lanseria - One of two international airports located in Gauteng Province.
- Rhino and Lion Nature Reserve - A wildlife center featuring four of the Big Five species and free-roaming antelopes. The big cats are rescued animals kept in enclosures for safe monitoring.
