The day kicks off with breakfast and coffee at the charming St Just Cafe, allowing time to explore the town square and main street. Next, embark on the Heritage Passport tour, selecting from 11 National Heritage listed sites, such as the Monster Mine Site, Morphett’s Engine House, and Redruth Gaol. Each site narrates a story, from Burra’s bustling mining era to its cultural development. The tour proceeds at your pace, with ample time for exploration.
Lunch is either picked up in Burra or from Hallett Country Store en route to Mount Bryan (subject to opening hours). While in Hallett, there’s an opportunity to visit the unique store and grab a snack before continuing to Mount Bryan.
- Mount Bryan - Traveling east from the Barrier Highway, the journey passes the breathtaking Razorback Range and Mount Bryan, leading to Sir Hubert Wilkens’ cottage. Restored in 2001 by Dick Smith and the Australian Geographic Society, this site offers a moment to reflect on the life of this legendary explorer and his Burra roots. The tour continues along dirt roads to Dares Hill Summit, offering spectacular views before exploring William Dare’s ruins and heading back toward Caroona Creek.
Throughout the journey, there are opportunities to pause, take photos, relax, discuss the indigenous and European histories of the region, and admire the wildlife. The area is known for its dramatic views and abundant wildlife, including kangaroos, wallabies, emus, and the chance to see the magnificent wedgetail eagle.
As the day draws to a close, the tour heads toward Caroona Creek and back to the Barrier Highway, stopping at the iconic Midnight Oil house from the 1987 album ‘Diesel and Dust’. The sunset provides a perfect end to a wonderful day.
