- Badlands National Park - The Badlands are truly captivating. They are unique, untamed, serene, and expansive.
The changing colors with the light are always mesmerizing. Sunrise and sunset here feel almost sacred.
Bison, bighorn sheep, and prairie dogs are frequently seen. They seem to belong to the land more than humans do.
This is more than just a sightseeing spot. It’s a place that resonates deeply. Raw and authentic.
- Sage Creek Wilderness Area - This area is a peaceful retreat away from the crowds. No paved roads, no noise—just open spaces and wildlife in their natural habitat.
Bison are often seen up close here. They are calm yet majestic, offering a true sense of perspective.
It’s a wonderful place to pause and take it all in. The quiet here is indescribable.
It feels as if the land has remained unchanged for a millennium.
- Pinnacles Overlook - This is often the first spot that leaves visitors in awe. It’s understandable—it makes a strong impression.
The view seems endless. Layers of rock, sky, and space make everything else seem insignificant.
It’s also a prime location for wildlife viewing. Bighorn sheep are often spotted just below the ridge.
It’s an essential stop, without a doubt.
- Ancient Hunters Overlook - This spot is easy to miss, but it holds significant history. People hunted bison here long before roads existed.
It’s fascinating to imagine what life was like back then. The past is palpable here.
There isn’t much to read or many signs. Just quiet hills and stories for those willing to listen.
- Yellow Mounds Overlook - These hills appear as if they were painted. Bright yellows, purples, and pinks that are unexpected in South Dakota.
They are ancient soil layers brought to the surface. A geologist’s paradise. A photographer’s too.
It’s one of the most vibrant stops in the entire park—and visitors always want to explore here.
- Bigfoot Pass Overlook - This is a place of deep significance. Named after Chief Big Foot, who perished at Wounded Knee.
He and his people passed through here during a harsh winter. It ended tragically.
Stopping here is about sharing the story. Not to dampen spirits, but to honor what occurred.
It’s part of the land’s history.
- Homestead Overlook - This spot may seem simple, but it speaks volumes. Imagine arriving with a wagon and being told, “This is yours.”
Endless grasslands. Wind. No trees. Just you and what you could build.
Life wasn’t easy. It still isn’t. But people tried, and some remained.
It’s a reflective place to consider what it took to start from scratch.
- Fossil Exhibit Trail - This short trail is perfect for both kids and adults interested in the prehistoric life that once thrived here.
It features fossil displays, engaging signs, and is flat enough for everyone to enjoy.
No need for hiking boots or water bottles—just a sense of curiosity.
We stop here when visitors want a hands-on, easy walk.
- Ben Reifel Visitor Center - For those eager to learn more, this is the ideal spot. Clean restrooms, excellent exhibits, and friendly rangers.
Visitors can watch fossils being cleaned in the lab or ask questions and receive informative answers.
It’s a great place to cool off, grab a map, or gain insight into what makes this place special.
- Big Badlands Overlook - This is the first “wow” moment for those entering from Wall.
The view opens up quickly—layers of red, white, gold, and pink stretching for miles.
It’s an excellent spot for sunrise if you’re an early riser. The views surpass any screen’s capability.
Even after numerous visits, it’s still worth pulling over for this one.
- Wall Drug - Wall Drug is delightfully quirky. It began with free ice water during the Great Depression.
Now it’s part diner, part museum, part wild west photo opportunity.
Visitors can enjoy a donut, sit on a jackalope, or find a pair of boots.
It’s cheesy, yes. But it’s also enjoyable. And the coffee is still just five cents.
