Srirangapatnam Fort - Srirangapatna is a historic town that once served as the capital of the Wodeyar dynasty and later of Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan. This town is an island formed by two branches of the river Kaveri, often referred to as the Ganges of the South. Enclosed within a double-walled fortress, the fort was initially constructed in the 16th century and later reinforced in the 18th century. Surrounded by water on three sides and a moat on the fourth, Srirangapatna offers numerous attractions for both Indian and international visitors. Highlights include the fort itself, the Sriranganatha temple, Col. Bailey’s dungeon, the ruins of Tipu’s palace within the fort, the magnificent summer palace ‘Daria Daulat Bagh’ outside the fort, Tipu’s mausoleum ‘Gumbaz’, river ghats for bathing and rituals, the site where Tipu’s body was discovered, Jami Masjid and its minarets, among others. A drive around the fort area and a visit to Tipu’s palace are recommended. It’s a 45-minute drive from here to Somanathpur, the next destination.

Somnathpur Temple - The Keshava temple at Somanthapur, located 35 km from Mysore, is a remarkable temple built in the 13th century during the Hoysala dynasty’s reign. It ranks among the top three temples out of the 92 constructed by the Hoysalas. The temple is set on a star-shaped platform adorned with high-quality sculptures. Notable features include the highly symmetrical and geometric lathe-turned pillars, 16 unique ceilings each featuring a banana flower motif, exquisite statues of Venugopala and Janardhana in two of the three sanctum sanctorum, the well-preserved and ornate vimanas, 480 uniquely carved elephants at the base, and a multitude of gods and goddesses. It took 500 artists approximately 40 years to complete this temple, which was later vandalized by the Mughals in the 14th century. Although it is no longer used for rituals, it stands as a testament to artistic achievement. It’s a one-hour drive from here to Mysore Palace.

Mysuru Palace - The Mysore Palace is the most opulent and luxurious palace in South India, often referred to as the “Palace of Versailles” of India. Constructed in 1912 in the Indo-Saracenic style, the Chief Architect was Henry Irwin, an Englishman. The grandeur of Mysore Palace is evident in its embellishments, including tiles from England, marble from Italy, chandeliers from Czechoslovakia, cast iron pillars and stained glass from Scotland, teak wood from Burma, and jaguar bronze statues from England. The palace is situated on 45 acres of land, which also houses several temples. It is divided into two sections: one managed by the State Government and the other belonging to the royal Wodeyar family. The fame of Mysore Palace is such that it attracts more visitors annually than the Taj Mahal! It’s a 10-minute drive from here to Devaraja Market, with a one-hour lunch break recommended between visits.

Devaraja Market - This colorful and vibrant market is one of the most captivating visits in South India, especially for Western travelers. A visit to this market has become an essential part of Mysore itineraries, sometimes even preferred by international travelers over other famous monuments. The market is laid out on a rectangular grid with separate sections for vegetables, fruits, and flowers. Its photogenic nature often leads tourists to lose themselves, forgetting the paths they took. Adding to the experience are street vendors, perfume makers, chai-wallahs, garland makers, and color pigment sellers, all eager to capture your attention and sell their goods. To witness a microcosm of India in action, visit a market like this. Come and experience it for yourself!
