Moshi to Machame Gate
Mount Kilimanjaro - The operator will collect you from your accommodation along with your guide and transport you to the Machame gate for registration. Here, you will meet the rest of your team and begin your first day of hiking. On this day, the hike will commence through the rainforest and giant heathers for approximately 6 hours to reach the first overnight camp.
Machame Camp to Shira Camp
Mount Kilimanjaro - The trail is short, steep, rocky, and dusty. It is a leisurely hike with plenty of breaks and ample time to acclimatize. Most of the route is sparse in vegetation, offering little shade from the sun. You will cross numerous ridges and encounter the first of many Senecios.
Shira Camp to Barranco Camp
Mount Kilimanjaro - Begin by climbing over boulders and a few rocks, followed by a steady uphill trek to Lava Tower, where you will stop for lunch around noon. For those interested, there is an option to climb the Lava Tower, which stands at 14,850 feet (you may experience a mild headache due to the altitude change). From Lava Tower, descend for about 2 hours through dusty and rocky trails to Barranco Camp at 13,000 feet.
Barranco Camp to Barafu Camp
Mount Kilimanjaro - After spending a night at the impressive Barranco Wall (initially a daunting sight), you will ascend this remarkable obstacle, which usually proves easier than expected. Reaching just below the Heim Glacier, you will appreciate the stunning beauty of Kilimanjaro. You will then proceed to Barafu Camp. “Barafu” is the Swahili word for “ice,” and it is a stark and inhospitable camping area for the night. Exposed to constant winds, the tents are set up on a narrow, rocky, and precarious ridge. Familiarize yourself with the terrain before dark to avoid any mishaps. The summit is now 1,214 meters higher, and you will begin your final ascent attempt that same night. Prepare your gear, hiking poles, and thermal clothing for the summit attempt. To prevent freezing, it is advisable to carry your water in a thermal flask.
Barafu Camp (4,681m) to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) to Mweka Camp (3,090m)
Mount Kilimanjaro - In the early morning hours (midnight to 2 am), the journey to the summit continues between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers. You will head in a northwesterly direction, ascending towards Stella Point on the crater rim. This is the most mentally and physically demanding part of the trek. At Stella Point (5,700m), you will take a short rest and be rewarded with a breathtaking sunrise (weather permitting). From Stella Point, you may encounter snow during the 1-hour ascent to the summit. At Uhuru Peak, you will have reached the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the African continent. Faster hikers may witness the sunrise from the summit.
From the summit, the descent continues straight down to the Mweka Hut campsite, with a stop at Barafu for lunch. Gaiters and trekking poles are recommended for the loose gravel on the descent. Mweka Camp is located in the upper forest, where mist or rain can be expected in the late afternoon.
Mweka Camp (3,090m) to Mweka Gate (1,641m)
Mount Kilimanjaro - After an early and well-deserved breakfast, enjoy a short 4 to 6-hour scenic hike back to the park gate. Some hikers may experience knee issues, which could extend the descent longer than anticipated. It is strongly advised not to tip your porters until you and all your gear have safely reached the gate. Visit the tips page for more information. At Mweka Gate, you will sign your name and details in a register. This is also where successful climbers receive their summit certificates. Climbers who reached Stella Point (5,739m) receive green certificates, while those who reached Uhuru Peak (5,895m) receive gold certificates. A vehicle will meet you at Mweka Village to transport you back to your accommodation.
