Mount Kilimanjaro - Travel from Moshi town to the Londorossi Park Gate. From there, take a 4WD vehicle along a forest track for 11 km/7 mi (45 minutes) to Lemosho Glades, where camping is possible. From the Glades, enjoy a 3-hour walk along scenic forest trails to the Mti Mkubwa (big tree) campsite.
Mkubwa Camp (2,750 m/9,020 ft) to Shira Camp 1 (3,500 m/11,485 ft) 12 km
Mount Kilimanjaro - Today, trek across a plateau of grassy moorland and heather dotted with volcanic rock formations. The destination is Shira 1 Camp, offering views of Kibo Peak floating on the clouds. Gain a significant amount of altitude today, with some steep sections along the route.
Shira 1 Camp (3500m) to Shira 2 Camp (3900m)
Mount Kilimanjaro - Today, enjoy views of the Northern Ice fields from the mountain’s western side, with unique perspectives of Kibo. The steady climb across the Shira Plateau moorland aids acclimatization, offering stunning panoramic views. The destination is Shira 2 Camp. In the afternoon, take an acclimatization walk before returning to camp for dinner and overnight stay.
Shira Camp 2 (3,840 m/12,600 ft) to Lava Tower (4,630 m/15,190 ft) to Barranco Camp (3,950 m/12,960 ft) 15 km
Mount Kilimanjaro - After breakfast, hike east up a steepening path above the highest vegetation towards Kilimanjaro’s looming mass. After several hours, traverse a rocky landscape to reach the prominent Lava Tower at 4,630 m/15,190 ft. This significant remnant of Kilimanjaro’s volcanic past is several hundred feet high, with the trail passing directly below it. For those feeling adventurous, a scramble to the top of the tower is possible. After a lunch stop near Lava Tower, descend for 2 hours below the lower cliffs of the Western Breach and Breach Wall to Barranco Camp at 3,950 m/12,960 ft. Numerous photo opportunities abound, especially if the walls are adorned with ice. Barranco Camp is nestled in a valley below the Breach and Great Barranco Walls, offering a memorable sunset while awaiting dinner. Be mindful of any signs of altitude sickness on this day.
Barranco Camp (3,900 m/12,800 ft) to Karanga Camp (4,200 m/13,780 ft) 7 km
Mount Kilimanjaro - After breakfast, continue up a steep ridge to the great Barranco Wall, then climb this imposing obstacle, which is easier than it appears. Upon reaching the top just below the Heim Glacier, appreciate the beauty of Kilimanjaro. With Kibo’s glaciers towering overhead, descend into the lush Karanga Valley to the Karanga Valley campsite. From the camp, gaze east to see the jagged peaks of Mawenzi piercing the African sky. After a hot lunch in camp, the afternoon is free for rest or exploration. Following two long days, this shorter day is crucial for acclimatization, as the summit push is imminent.
Karanga Camp (4,200 m/13,780 ft) to Barafu Camp (4,550 m/14,930 ft) 13 km
Mount Kilimanjaro - In the morning, hike east over intervening ridges and valleys to join the Mweka Route, which will be the descent route. Turn left towards the mountain and hike up the ridge through a sparse landscape for another hour to the Barafu Hut, where a hot lunch awaits. The last water source on the route is in the Karanga Valley; there is no water at Barafu Camp, despite “Barafu” meaning ice in Swahili. The famous snows of Kilimanjaro are far above Barafu Camp near the summit. Tents will be pitched on a narrow, stony, wind-swept ridge, so familiarize yourself with the terrain before dark to avoid accidents. Prepare equipment and warm clothing for the summit climb, and drink plenty of fluids. After an early dinner, retire for a few hours of precious sleep.
Summit Day! Barafu Camp (4,550 m/14,930 ft) to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m/19,340 ft) to Mweka Camp
Mount Kilimanjaro - Rise around 11:30 PM, and after some hot tea and biscuits, set off into the night. The 6-hour climb northwest through heavy scree between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers to Stella Point on the crater rim is the most challenging part of the route for most climbers. At Stella Point, take a short rest and enjoy a breathtaking sunrise. At Stella Point, join the top part of the Marangu Route. Depending on the season and recent storms, snow may be encountered on the remaining hike along the rim to Uhuru Peak. On the summit, savor the achievement and know that this day will be remembered for a lifetime. After a 3-hour descent from the summit back to Barafu Camp, enjoy a well-earned but brief rest, collect gear, and hike down a rock and scree path into the moorland and eventually into the forest to Mweka Camp.
Mweka Camp (3,100 m/10,170 ft) to Mweka Gate (1,980 m/6,500 ft) to Moshi (890 m/2,920 ft) 15 km
Mount Kilimanjaro - After a well-deserved breakfast, embark on a short, scenic, 3-hour hike back to the park gate. Refrain from tipping porters until all gear has safely reached the gate, but remember to tip the staff at the gate. At Mweka Gate, sign your name and add details in a register. Successful climbers receive summit certificates here. Those who reached Stella Point receive green certificates, while those who reached Uhuru Peak receive gold certificates. From Mweka Gate, continue down to Mweka Village, possibly a muddy, 3 km, 1-hour hike if the road is too muddy for vehicles. In Mweka Village, enjoy a delicious hot lunch before being driven back to Moshi for a much-needed hot shower and a comfortable night at a hotel in Moshi.

The Lemosho Route is often regarded as the premier path on Mount Kilimanjaro, offering climbers stunning views from every direction. In the past, only two primary routes were available for ascending Kilimanjaro – the Marangu (Coca Cola) route and the Machame (Whiskey) route. However, with the growth of Tanzania’s tourism sector, the Kilimanjaro park authority introduced additional trails to Africa’s tallest peak. Lemosho, a relatively new path, is favored by esteemed operators for its scenic beauty, seclusion, and high success rate. In essence, it enhances the likelihood of climbers reaching the summit and thoroughly enjoying the journey. The Lemosho route can be completed in as few as six days (five nights) on the mountain.
