A Serendipitous Start

The sun was just beginning to peek over the horizon as I found myself in the charming town of Tarcoles, ready to embark on the Puntarenas Sightseeing Tour. As a seasoned surfer, I’m always on the lookout for new adventures, and this tour promised a unique blend of nature and culture. Our guide, Vini, greeted us with a warm smile and an infectious enthusiasm that set the tone for the day.

Our first stop was a monkey preserve, where the air was filled with the chatter of monkeys swinging freely from the trees. It was a delightful sight, reminiscent of the playful dolphins I often encounter while surfing. The preserve was a hidden gem, tucked away from the usual tourist trails, and it felt like a secret shared among friends.

As we continued our journey, Vini navigated the rural roads with ease, pointing out the vibrant flora and fauna that surrounded us. Despite a minor detour due to construction, the scenic route offered a glimpse into the heart of Costa Rica’s countryside, a place where time seemed to slow down, much like the perfect wave.

A Taste of Local Flavors

Our next stop was a roadside fruit stand, where we indulged in the exotic flavors of water apple, mango, caimito, and cashew fruit. Each bite was a burst of freshness, a reminder of the simple pleasures that life on the road can offer. The stand was a colorful oasis, and the friendly vendors shared stories of their lives, adding a personal touch to our experience.

As we drove through the countryside, we kept our eyes peeled for the vibrant plumage of macaws and toucans. While they remained elusive at first, the journey was far from disappointing. We spotted Brama cows grazing lazily in the fields and an iguana basking in the sun, a scene that felt like a snapshot from one of my many surf trips.

The town of Orotina welcomed us with open arms, and we made our way up a bumpy dirt road to Rancho Vista Limonal. The panoramic view from the restaurant was breathtaking, offering a 360° perspective of the lush landscape. As we enjoyed some local snacks, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to explore such a beautiful corner of the world.

Wildlife Wonders and Farewell

Our final destination was El Garden, a sprawling butterfly garden, restaurant, and souvenir shop. It was here that we witnessed the majestic sight of two scarlet macaws mating in the trees, a rare and beautiful moment that left us all in awe. The garden was a sanctuary of color and life, a fitting end to our day of exploration.

On our way back to the cruise ship, we made a quick stop along the river, where we were treated to the sight of a crocodile emerging from the water and over 100 tiny, white sand crabs scuttling along the shore. It was a reminder of the wild beauty that Costa Rica has to offer, a place where nature reigns supreme.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, I reflected on the day’s adventures. The Puntarenas Sightseeing Tour had been a journey of discovery, a chance to connect with the land and its people in a way that only travel can offer. For a surfer like me, always chasing the next wave, it was a reminder that sometimes the best adventures are found on land, in the company of new friends and unexpected wonders.
