Completed on August 22, 2011, the memorial honors Martin Luther King, Jr.’s legacy of non-violent philosophy striving for freedom, justice, and equality. As the first African American individual honored on the National Mall, this space invites reflection on his legacy and enjoyment of the Cherry Blossom trees in spring. (15 min.)
- Arlington National Cemetery - Cross the Potomac River via Memorial Bridge to enter the nation’s most significant military burial ground. After a 25-minute walk through the grounds, witness the solemn Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Visit inside Arlington National Cemetery for 1hr. 30 mins.
- U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial - Those who prefer not to walk to The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier can visit the United States Marine Corps War Memorial. You’ll still see Arlington’s shrines while driving through and can step off at the famous bronze sculpture depicting six marines raising the flagpole on Mount Suribachi during the Battle of Iwo Jima on 2/19/1945. While the scene depicts a famous World War II clash, the memorial is dedicated to all Marines who have given their lives in defense of the United States since 1775. (15 min.)
