Bago, once known as Pegu, is an ancient port city and former capital, established in 825 by two Mon princes.
Explore the Htaukkyant War Cemetery, located between Bago and Yangon. This beautifully maintained cemetery, managed by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, is the final resting place for over 27,000 allied soldiers.
- Shwemawdaw Paya - Upon reaching Bago, visit the Shwemawdaw Pagoda, which boasts a history of over a thousand years. After being restored following an earthquake in the 1930s, the pagoda features a remarkable spire that surpasses the height of Yangon’s Shwedagon Pagoda. Also, visit the Hinthargone Pagoda, where the Nat Shrine is located. Here, you can observe or experience the unique practices of Nat worship by its devotees.
- Kyaly Khat Wai Monastery - Around 10:40 A.M., proceed to Kya Khat Wine Monastery, where over 400 monks silently and orderly queue every morning at 11:00 A.M. for their final meal of the day. Visitors are required to observe quietly without speaking or interfering.

- Kambazathadi Golden Palace - Visit the Kanbawzathadi Golden Palace, a reconstruction of the original Royal Palace from the late 16th century. This ornate golden palace reflects the grandeur and wealth of the second Burmese empire. It was rebuilt according to the original design, informed by archaeological findings and original building plans. The expansive palace comprised 76 apartments and halls.
- Shwethalyaung Buddha - Next, visit the massive Shwethalyaung Buddha image, measuring 55 meters in length and 15 meters in height, one of the nation’s most venerated objects. Nearby, a local market offers locally grown agricultural products. Also, visit the Maharzedi Pagoda, known for its impressive bell-shaped stupa. This tour provides a deep understanding of the region’s history and culture. Return to Yangon and transfer back to your hotel.

- As you will be visiting religious sites, please wear clothes that cover your shoulders and knees, and remember to take off your shoes and socks when entering pagoda areas
- This tour is not available during the Water Festival between 12 to 18 Apr. During this time, everything in town is closed: restaurants, shops, markets, etc. Driving through Yangon and Bago is extremely difficult if not impossible because people celebrate the famous water-festival. You cannot avoid of getting very wet because everyone throws water at everybody. People drive through the city in open cars and there are stages along the street where people throw water. Everybody going up will get very wet.
