• Monastery Sevanavank - Mariam, the daughter of King Ashot I, vowed to construct 30 churches in memory of her late husband, a promise she fulfilled throughout her life. One of these, Sevanavank, was established in 874. Originally founded in the 4th century, Sevanavank flourished in the 9th century. Besides the two existing churches, the distinctive 17th-century khachkar, adorned with numerous biblical scenes, is particularly noteworthy. The name of the capital, Yerevan, was first documented on the dome of Sevanavank.
• Lake Sevan - Our first destination is Lake Sevan, the jewel of Armenia. Situated 1900 meters above sea level, Sevan ranks as the second-highest freshwater lake globally. Of volcanic origin, it is encircled by mountain ranges and divided into two sections with a large peninsula. Lake Sevan is a popular spot for tourists seeking both active and leisurely activities. With a maximum depth of 83 meters, Sevan is the only one of the three historic Armenian lakes located within the Republic of Armenia.
• Haghartsin Monastery - While it is common in Armenia to use primarily tuff or basalt stones for construction, Haghartsin Monastery was built using travertine and basalt. Constructed from white stone, this monastery has held a significant place in Armenian culture and education since the 10th century. The monastery was built over approximately three centuries in the picturesque valley of the Tavush forests, nestled in the heart of the forest. The monastery’s refectory is considered an architectural masterpiece. Additionally, there is a royal mausoleum on site. Nearby, delicious gata is available for purchase.
• Goshavank Monastery - Goshavank is one of the most renowned spiritual and educational centers of medieval Armenia, named after the versatile clergyman and scholar Mkhitar Gosh. His collection of laws is regarded as exceptional for its era and continues to influence global legislation. The monastery complex, comprising five churches, three chapels, a vestibule, and a refectory, captivates every curious visitor. Located in the village of Gosh, the intricately carved 13th-century khachkar by master Poghos is particularly noteworthy.
