Riding Waves and Climbing Peaks: My Adventure on Pacaya Volcano

The Journey Begins
As a seasoned traveler and surfer, I’ve always been drawn to the raw beauty of nature, whether it’s the perfect wave or the rugged terrain of a volcano. So when I found myself in Antigua, Guatemala, the allure of the Pacaya Volcano was irresistible. My wife and I, both adventurers at heart, decided to embark on this half-day journey to one of Central America’s most active volcanoes.
We were picked up from our hotel in Antigua, and the journey began with a scenic drive through charming villages and lush mountains. The anticipation built as we merged with another group of hikers at a local coffee shop. The drive was long but fascinating, offering glimpses of the vibrant Guatemalan countryside. As we approached the entrance to the National Park, the excitement was palpable.
The Ascent
The hike up Pacaya Volcano is not for the faint-hearted. With a 1500-foot altitude change, the trail is steep and challenging. As someone who spends most of his time riding waves, I found the hike to be a refreshing change of pace. We started on foot, but the steep incline soon had us considering the horses that followed us, guided by local experts.
Opting for the horses was a wise decision, especially for those not accustomed to such elevation changes. The guides, who hike up and down twice a day, were incredibly helpful, ensuring even novice riders felt comfortable. As we ascended, the landscape transformed from lush forests to rugged volcanic terrain. The views were breathtaking, with the volcano’s peak shrouded in clouds, adding an air of mystery to the adventure.
The Descent and Discovery
Reaching the top was exhilarating, but the descent offered its own set of wonders. We walked down to an area covered in volcanic lava rocks from the 2021 eruption. It felt like stepping onto another planet, with the heat from the rocks warming our marshmallows to perfection.
Our guide, affectionately known as “Monkey,” shared fascinating insights into the local flora, pointing out plants used for making tequila and marimbas. The trail down was less steep, allowing us to soak in the stunning views and the unique volcanic landscape.
As we reached the end of our journey, a small hut offered refreshing drinks and fruit, a perfect way to conclude the adventure. The two-hour bus ride back to Antigua gave us time to reflect on the unforgettable experience, one that combined the thrill of exploration with the serene beauty of nature.
