Beyond the Waves: Discovering Bijagua’s Rainforest Magic

In search of a new adventure beyond the waves, I embarked on a journey to Bijagua de Upala for a rainforest tour. Join me as I explore the lush jungle, savor Costa Rican flavors, and discover the magic of sloths, waterfalls, and coffee.

A Journey Through the Lush Green

The day began with a gentle breeze and the promise of adventure. My wife and I were picked up from our cozy spot in Tamarindo by Fernando, our guide for the day. His SUV was a comfortable cocoon, air-conditioned and perfect for the two-and-a-half-hour journey to Bijagua de Upala. As we cruised along, Fernando’s stories about the local area painted vivid pictures in our minds. We even caught a glimpse of a volcano, its majestic form rising against the horizon. It was like a mini-tour before the real adventure began.

Arriving at the rainforest, I felt a familiar thrill, akin to spotting the perfect wave. The air was thick with the scent of earth and life, and the sounds of the jungle enveloped us. Our guide, Fabio, led us into the heart of the rainforest, where the magic truly began. Monkeys swung from branches, their playful antics a joy to watch. We were lucky enough to see sloths, including a baby, lounging lazily on the ground—a rare sight indeed. The rainforest was alive with frogs, snakes, and birds, each adding to the symphony of nature.

The experience was grounding, much like the ocean’s embrace. Fabio’s knowledge of the flora and fauna was impressive, and his passion was infectious. We wandered through the lush greenery, taking in the towering trees and vibrant plants. It was a reminder of the beauty and complexity of nature, a world away from the surf but equally captivating.

Coffee, Cacao, and Costa Rican Flavors

After our rainforest exploration, we made our way to a nearby coffee and cacao plantation. As a surfer who thrives on caffeine, this was a treat. The rich aroma of coffee beans and the sweet scent of cacao filled the air, a sensory delight. Chris, our guide at the plantation, shared the secrets of coffee and chocolate production, from bean to cup and pod to bar.

As someone who spends a lot of time in countries known for their coffee, it was fascinating to see the process up close. We sampled the freshest brews and indulged in chocolate that melted in our mouths. It was a reminder of the simple pleasures in life, much like catching a wave at sunrise.

Lunch was a feast of Costa Rican flavors at El Sabór de Doña Carmen. The food was a celebration of local ingredients, each bite a testament to the region’s culinary heritage. As we waited for our meal, we wandered through a butterfly garden, where a butterfly landed on my head—a moment of whimsy that added to the day’s magic.

Waterfalls and Farewells

Our final stop was the Llanos de Cortes Waterfall, a hidden gem nestled in the lush landscape. The short hike to the waterfall was a gentle stroll, and the sight that greeted us was breathtaking. The cascade of water was a refreshing end to our day, much like a cool dip after a long surf session.

We waded into the pool, the water cool against our skin, and let the spray wash over us. It was a moment of pure bliss, a connection to nature that felt both grounding and exhilarating. As we made our way back to Tamarindo, the sun setting behind us, I reflected on the day’s adventures.

This tour was a reminder of the beauty that lies beyond the waves, a chance to connect with nature in a different way. From the rainforest’s vibrant life to the rich flavors of coffee and chocolate, it was a day of discovery and delight. For those seeking a break from the surf, or simply a new adventure, I can’t recommend this experience enough. Until next time, Bijagua de Upala, you’ve captured my heart.
