From Waves to Waterfalls: A Surfer’s Journey into Costa Rica’s Rainforest
In search of a break from the waves, I ventured into the heart of Costa Rica’s rainforest for a day filled with sloths, waterfalls, and coffee. Join me as I trade the surf for the lush embrace of Bijagua de Upala.
A Morning in the Heart of the Rainforest
As a seasoned surfer, I’m used to the rhythm of the ocean, the ebb and flow of the tides, and the thrill of catching the perfect wave. But every now and then, I like to trade the salty breeze for the lush embrace of the rainforest. This time, my wife and I found ourselves in Bijagua de Upala, ready to embark on the Rainforest Tour that promised sloths, waterfalls, and coffee.
We started our day early, leaving behind the familiar sound of crashing waves for the symphony of the jungle. The drive was long, but the anticipation of what lay ahead kept us buzzing with excitement. As we arrived, the air was thick with the scent of earth and greenery, a stark contrast to the salty tang of the ocean. Our guide, Hilary, greeted us with a warm smile, and we set off on our adventure.
The first stop was the Llanos de Cortes waterfall. A short walk through the forest brought us to this hidden gem, where water cascaded down into a serene pool. We hadn’t packed swimsuits, but that didn’t stop us from wading in, feeling the cool water against our skin. It was a refreshing change from the sun-drenched beaches we were used to, and the perfect way to start our rainforest journey.
Up Close with Costa Rica’s Wildlife
Next, we ventured into the heart of the rainforest, where the promise of sloths and other wildlife awaited. The path was easy, a gentle stroll through the jungle, but the sights were anything but ordinary. Sloths hung lazily from the trees, their slow movements a stark contrast to the fast-paced world we often find ourselves in. It was a reminder to slow down, to savor the moment, much like waiting for the perfect wave.
Our guide knew exactly where to look, pointing out frogs, snakes, and even the tiniest of ants. It was like stepping into a living, breathing sanctuary, where every creature had its place. The sloths, in particular, were a highlight, their gentle presence a calming influence amidst the vibrant chaos of the jungle.
As we walked, Hilary shared stories of the rainforest, its history, and its inhabitants. It was a fascinating insight into a world so different from the ocean, yet equally captivating. The experience was a reminder of the beauty and diversity of Costa Rica, a country that never ceases to amaze.
A Taste of Costa Rica
The final leg of our journey took us to a coffee and chocolate plantation, where the rich aroma of freshly roasted beans filled the air. As a coffee lover, this was a dream come true. We learned about the cultivation process, from bean to cup, and even got to sample some of the finest brews Costa Rica has to offer.
The chocolate was equally impressive, with flavors that danced on the tongue, a sweet contrast to the bitter notes of the coffee. It was a sensory experience, one that left us with a newfound appreciation for the art of coffee and chocolate making.
Lunch was a feast of traditional Costa Rican cuisine, with homemade tortillas and fresh lemonade that quenched our thirst after a day of exploration. The butterfly garden was an unexpected bonus, a kaleidoscope of colors that added a touch of magic to our meal.
As we made our way back, the van was filled with laughter and stories, a testament to the incredible day we had. The Rainforest Tour was more than just a break from the beach; it was a journey into the heart of Costa Rica, a reminder of the beauty that lies beyond the waves.
