Chasing Rain and Sloths in Bijagua’s Rainforest
In search of a break from the waves, my wife and I ventured into the rainforests of Bijagua de Upala. Our day was filled with unexpected rain, elusive sloths, and the rich flavors of Costa Rican coffee and chocolate. Join me as I recount our adventure through the lush landscapes and warm hospitality of this beautiful region.
A Rainy Welcome to the Rainforest
As a seasoned traveler and surfer, I’ve learned to embrace the unexpected. So when my wife and I decided to take a break from the waves and explore the lush rainforests of Bijagua de Upala, we were ready for whatever Mother Nature had in store. Our adventure began with a private tour led by the ever-attentive Fernando, who greeted us with a warm smile and a promise of a day filled with sloths, waterfalls, and coffee.
The day started with a visit to the Llanos de Cortes waterfall, a stunning cascade nestled in the heart of the rainforest. Fernando, knowing the ins and outs of the area, took us there first thing in the morning to avoid the crowds. The waterfall was a sight to behold, with its clear waters tumbling into a serene pool. However, the path down was steep and slippery, a reminder that good shoes are a must for such adventures. As we made our way back up, the rain began to fall, a gentle reminder of the rainforest’s unpredictable nature.
The Dance of the Rain
Rain in the rainforest is as inevitable as waves in the ocean, and as the skies opened up, we found ourselves drenched but undeterred. Our guide, Julianna, led us through the dense foliage, her eyes scanning the treetops for any sign of the elusive sloths. Despite her best efforts, the rain had driven most of the wildlife into hiding, leaving us with only a few glimpses of the creatures we had hoped to see up close.
The rain added a mystical quality to the forest, the droplets creating a symphony as they hit the leaves. While the lack of animal sightings was a disappointment, the experience of walking through a living, breathing rainforest was unforgettable. The rain may have obscured our view, but it also brought the forest to life in a way that sunshine never could.
A Taste of Costa Rica
As the rain subsided to a drizzle, we moved on to the coffee and chocolate tour, a highlight of the day. Our guide, Jostin, was a fountain of knowledge, sharing the secrets of coffee and cacao production with infectious enthusiasm. The aroma of freshly roasted beans filled the air as we sampled the rich flavors of Costa Rican coffee and chocolate, a treat for the senses.
Lunch at El Sabór de Doña Carmen was a feast, with generous portions that left us satisfied and ready for the journey back. The drive to and from Bijagua was long, but Fernando ensured our comfort with cold drinks and engaging conversation.
While the rain may have dampened our chances of seeing sloths, it didn’t dampen our spirits. The warmth and hospitality of the people we met along the way made the day memorable. As we returned to our nomadic lifestyle, chasing waves and writing about our adventures, we carried with us the essence of the rainforest—a reminder that sometimes, the journey is just as important as the destination.
