The Call of the Wild: Setting Out for La Leona
As a seasoned surfer, I’ve spent countless hours chasing the perfect wave, but every now and then, the call of the land beckons me to explore beyond the shoreline. This time, it was the allure of the La Leona Waterfall in Curubandé de Liberia that captured my imagination. My wife and I, both adventurers at heart, decided to trade our surfboards for hiking boots and embark on this much-talked-about waterfall adventure.
The journey began with a bumpy ride from the parking area to the trailhead, a 3 km stretch that felt like a mini adventure in itself. Riding in the back of a pickup truck, we were reminded of the rugged beauty that Costa Rica offers beyond its beaches. The anticipation built as we approached the trail, surrounded by lush greenery and the distant sound of rushing water.
Into the Heart of the Jungle
The hike to La Leona is a moderate trek, but don’t let that fool you—it’s an adventure through and through. The path winds through a forest alive with the sounds of nature, crossing streams and navigating rocky terrain. As someone who’s more accustomed to the rhythm of the ocean, the forest’s symphony was a refreshing change.
Our guide, a seasoned expert, led us with ease, sharing stories of the land and its history. The camaraderie among our group was palpable, a mix of fellow travelers from around the world, each drawn to the waterfall’s promise of natural splendor. We paused frequently, not just to catch our breath, but to capture the beauty around us—photos that would later serve as reminders of this incredible journey.
The Reveal: La Leona Waterfall
After an hour of hiking, the forest opened up to reveal the breathtaking sight of La Leona Waterfall. Nestled in a cave-like setting, the waterfall cascades into a pool of the bluest water I’ve ever seen. It was like stepping into a hidden paradise, a place where time seemed to stand still.
We wasted no time in diving into the cool, refreshing water, the mist from the waterfall enveloping us in a gentle embrace. It was a moment of pure bliss, a reminder of why we seek out these adventures. As we swam and explored, I couldn’t help but think of the waves waiting for us back on the coast, but for now, this was our playground.
The hike back was filled with laughter and shared stories, a testament to the bonds formed during such experiences. As we returned to the trailhead, I felt a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to explore Costa Rica’s natural wonders beyond its famous surf spots. La Leona Waterfall had left an indelible mark on my heart, a reminder of the beauty that lies just beyond the waves.
