From Surf to Summit: A Costa Rican Volcano Adventure
When the waves take a backseat, the call of the wild leads to unexpected adventures. Join me as I trade my surfboard for hiking boots and explore the wonders of Costa Rica’s volcanoes, hot springs, and wildlife.
A Journey to the Heart of Costa Rica
As a seasoned surfer and wanderer of Central America’s sun-drenched coastlines, I often find myself drawn to the ocean’s embrace. But every now and then, the call of the wild beckons me inland, away from the familiar rhythm of the waves. This time, it was the allure of the Costa Rica Volcano Tour that led me to the charming town of Curubandé de Liberia, nestled at the foot of the majestic Rincon de la Vieja volcano.
Our day began with a warm welcome from Fabio, our driver and guide for the day. With traffic surprisingly light, we had the luxury of a leisurely start, allowing us to explore a local store and even make a quick stop at Walmart for some essentials and souvenirs. Fabio’s easygoing nature set the tone for the day, making us feel more like friends than tourists.
The Adventure to La Leona Waterfall
The journey to La Leona Waterfall was nothing short of exhilarating. As someone who thrives on the thrill of the ocean, the adventure of climbing and swimming through the lush forest was a refreshing change of pace. The trail was challenging, with rocky paths and streams to navigate, but the reward was worth every step. The waterfall itself was a sight to behold, its crystal-clear waters cascading into a serene pool below.
Our guide was a fountain of knowledge, sharing fascinating tidbits about the local flora and fauna. I was intrigued to learn that the sulfur content in the water, a gift from the nearby volcano, made it inhospitable to fish and other aquatic life. Yet, the water was inviting, and we couldn’t resist taking a dip in its cool embrace.
Relaxation at Rio Negro Hot Springs
After a hearty lunch at a local eatery, where we savored traditional Costa Rican dishes, we made our way to the Rio Negro Hot Springs. I must admit, I approached the hot springs with a hint of skepticism, wary of the “man-made” label often attached to such attractions. However, my doubts were quickly dispelled as I witnessed the natural beauty of the springs.
The pools, fed by the geothermal activity of the volcano, offered a range of temperatures, each one a soothing balm for the body and soul. The volcanic mud, rich with minerals, left my skin feeling rejuvenated and soft. It was a surreal experience, surrounded by the lush greenery and the gentle sound of a stream flowing nearby.
As the day drew to a close, I found myself reflecting on the unexpected joys of this inland adventure. While the ocean will always be my first love, the Costa Rica Volcano Tour offered a different kind of thrill, one that I would gladly seek out again. Until the next wave calls, I’ll cherish the memories of this sun-soaked day in the heart of Costa Rica.
