Chasing Waterfalls: A Surfer’s Journey to La Leona
In search of a new adventure away from the waves, I ventured into the heart of Curubandé de Liberia for the La Leona Waterfall Hike. Join me as I recount the breathtaking views and thrilling experiences that made this journey unforgettable.
Into the Heart of the Jungle
As a seasoned surfer, I’ve spent countless hours riding the waves and soaking up the sun along the coasts of Central America. But every now and then, I crave a different kind of adventure, one that takes me away from the ocean and into the heart of the land. That’s how I found myself in Curubandé de Liberia, ready to embark on the La Leona Waterfall Hike.
The journey began with a short drive through the quaint villages of Colorado and Curubandé, where the pace of life is as laid-back as the ocean breeze. Arriving at the trailhead, I was greeted by Alejandro, our guide for the day. His enthusiasm was infectious, and I knew we were in for a treat. The trail itself was a rugged path through the jungle, with only a few manmade aids like ladders and tire steps to guide us. It was a refreshing change from the sandy beaches I’m used to, and the natural beauty of the rainforest was nothing short of breathtaking.
The Thrill of the Swim
The first dip into the cool, clear water was a welcome relief from the heat of the jungle. With a life vest to keep me afloat, I didn’t have to worry about swimming too hard. Instead, I could focus on the sheer joy of being surrounded by nature. The rope pull between the rocks added a touch of adventure, and I couldn’t help but smile as I made my way across.
Reaching the waterfall was like stepping into a postcard. The cascading water was a sight to behold, and thanks to Alejandro’s expert timing, we had the place to ourselves. Standing in the mineral-rich water, I felt a sense of peace and tranquility that only nature can provide. The water was safe and refreshing, and I couldn’t resist the urge to take a moment to simply look up and soak it all in.
A Leap of Faith
On the way back, we had the chance to jump off a small rock into a deeper pool. It was a safe and exhilarating experience, reminiscent of the thrill I get from catching a perfect wave. The jump was the perfect way to cap off an incredible day, and I couldn’t help but think about how much my fellow adventurer and wife would love this experience.
As I made my way back to the trailhead, I couldn’t shake the feeling of contentment that had settled over me. The La Leona Waterfall Hike was more than just a break from the surf; it was a reminder of the beauty and diversity that Central America has to offer. Whether you’re a seasoned traveler or a first-time explorer, this hike is a must-do. Pura Vida!
