ITINERARY FOR THE WEEKEND OF APRIL 12 - APRIL 13, 2025

Rainy Day Retreats: Cozy Indoor Adventures in Funchal, Madeira

Discover the cozy side of Funchal with indoor adventures perfect for a rainy weekend. From tuk-tuk tours through historic streets to exploring enchanting gardens, this guide ensures a memorable experience despite the weather.

Embrace the Charm of Funchal’s Old Town

Funchal, the vibrant capital of Madeira, is a city that effortlessly blends history with modernity. As you wander through the cobblestone streets of the Old Town, you’ll be captivated by the colorful painted doors that line Rua de Santa Maria. This artistic project breathes life into the area, transforming ordinary doorways into vibrant canvases. The Old Town is also home to the famous Poncha cocktail, a delightful concoction of rum, lemon, and honey that is sure to warm you up on a chilly day.

For a unique experience, hop on a tuk-tuk for the Tuk Tuk Tour through Funchal’s Old Town. This two-hour tour is available on April 12th from 8:30 AM to 10:30 AM and 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM. As you ride through the narrow alleys, your knowledgeable guide will share fascinating stories about the city’s history and culture. The tour culminates at Monte’s Church, where you can admire its stunning architecture before learning about Madeira’s iconic toboggans. Despite the rain, previous visitors have praised the tour for its engaging guides and memorable experiences.

“Great Time Despite the Rain! - Rui and Andre were fantastic. Unfortunately, we did not get to do the sledding due to rain, but these two gave us a great experience and tried to show us parts of Funchal that we had not already seen. It was an adventure that was fun despite being wet.” (Reviewed on 2024-10-11)

Discover the Enchanting Palheiro Gardens

On April 13th, take advantage of the partly cloudy weather to explore the breathtaking Palheiro Gardens. This private Tuk Tuk Adventure is available from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM, 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM, and 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM. As you journey through the Old Town and up to the gardens, your guide will regale you with tales of Funchal’s rich history and culture.

The Palheiro Gardens, situated 500 meters above sea level, are renowned for their exotic trees and stunning landscapes. As you wander through the gardens, you’ll be surrounded by the beauty of nature, with vibrant flowers and lush greenery at every turn. The gardens also feature a hotel, golf course, and orchid nursery, making it a perfect retreat for nature lovers.

“Brilliant tour and guide - Brilliant tour guide who was so friendly and informative. It was a really good experience and can’t praise him enough as we saw so much of Funchal too. Unfortunately, we had a rain shower at the gardens so didn’t see it at its best. We were dry in the Tuk Tuk though as clear windows that pull down and a blanket provided to keep you warm. Highly recommend this experience.” (Reviewed on 2024-12-31)
