Chasing Waterfalls: A Day at Llanos de Cortes

In search of a different kind of adventure, I ventured into the lush embrace of Guanacaste’s rainforest, leaving the waves behind. Join me as I explore the hidden gems of Llanos de Cortes, where waterfalls, wildlife, and wonder await.

A Hidden Gem in Guanacaste

As a seasoned surfer and lover of all things ocean, I often find myself chasing the perfect wave along the sun-drenched coasts of Central America. But every now and then, I crave a different kind of adventure—one that takes me away from the salty spray of the sea and into the lush embrace of the rainforest. That’s how I found myself at the Llanos de Cortes, a hidden gem nestled in the heart of Guanacaste Province.

The day began with a scenic drive through the rolling hills of Costa Rica, the early morning sun casting a golden glow over the landscape. Our guide, Alfi, was a fountain of knowledge, sharing stories and insights about the region as we made our way to our first stop: the Llanos de Cortes Waterfall. The sound of cascading water grew louder as we approached, and soon we were greeted by the sight of crystal-clear waters tumbling over moss-covered rocks into a tranquil pool below. Though the swimming area wasn’t deep enough for a proper swim, the beauty of the place was undeniable. I found myself content to simply sit on the sandy shores, soaking in the serenity and the symphony of nature around me.

Into the Heart of the Rainforest

Our next destination was the Tenorio Volcano National Park, a place I’d heard whispers of from fellow travelers. The park is home to the Rio Celeste, a river renowned for its striking turquoise hue. As we embarked on a guided hike through the dense rainforest, Alfi pointed out the unique flora and fauna that call this place home. The air was thick with the calls of exotic birds, and though we couldn’t spot the elusive toucans, their presence was felt in the vibrant symphony of the forest.

The highlight of the hike was undoubtedly the Rio Celeste Waterfall. Even from a distance, the sight of the turquoise waters cascading down a rugged cliff face was breathtaking. Unfortunately, heavy rains had delayed some stair repairs, preventing us from getting too close. But even from afar, the view was nothing short of spectacular. I took a moment to capture the scene in my mind, knowing that no photograph could truly do it justice.

A Close Encounter with Costa Rica’s Wildlife

After a hearty Costa Rican lunch, we made our way to the Jungle Life Sloth Sanctuary. As someone who spends most of his time in the ocean, the chance to see these endearing creatures up close was a rare treat. The sanctuary is a haven for sloths rescued from various situations, and our guide shared fascinating insights into their behaviors and habits. We were lucky enough to spot both species of sloths, their slow, deliberate movements a stark contrast to the frenetic energy of the rainforest.

The sanctuary was also home to a variety of other animals, and though we heard the calls of toucans, they remained elusive. Still, the experience was enriching, a reminder of the incredible biodiversity that Costa Rica has to offer. As the day came to a close, I found myself reflecting on the beauty and wonder of the natural world, grateful for the opportunity to explore it in such an intimate way.

In the end, the Llanos de Cortes experience was a perfect blend of adventure and relaxation, a chance to step away from the waves and immerse myself in the lush landscapes of Costa Rica. For anyone looking to explore the hidden gems of Guanacaste, I can’t recommend it enough. Llanos de Cortes Adventure
