Chasing Waterfalls and Wildlife in Guanacaste’s Hidden Gems

When I heard about the Llanos de Cortes adventure, I knew I had to experience it for myself. As a surfer and nature enthusiast, the promise of waterfalls, wildlife, and breathtaking hikes was irresistible. Here’s how my day unfolded in the heart of Guanacaste’s natural beauty.

A Waterfall Wonderland

The day began with the sun peeking over the horizon, casting a golden glow on the lush landscapes of Guanacaste Province. As a seasoned surfer, I’m no stranger to the allure of water, but the Llanos de Cortes Waterfall was something else entirely. The sound of cascading water grew louder as we approached, and soon, the waterfall revealed itself in all its glory. Crystal-clear waters tumbled over moss-covered rocks, creating a serene pool below. I couldn’t resist the call of the water and took a refreshing dip, feeling the cool embrace of nature.

The locals offered an optional hike, and being the adventurer I am, I couldn’t pass it up. We ventured into the surrounding forest, where we encountered bats hanging from trees and a massive frog that seemed to be the guardian of this hidden paradise. The hike culminated in a jump into a secluded lake, a moment of pure exhilaration that reminded me of the thrill of catching the perfect wave.

Sloths and Surprises

After drying off, we made our way to the Sloth Sanctuary. As soon as we stepped out of the car, we were greeted by the sight of a mother sloth lazily hanging from a tree, her baby nestled close. It was a heartwarming scene that set the tone for the rest of the visit. The sanctuary was a haven for wildlife, and we spotted a variety of creatures, including a vibrant toucan and other exotic animals.

Our guide, Kevin, was a fountain of knowledge, sharing insights about the animals and their habitats. His passion for conservation was infectious, and I found myself captivated by the stories of the sanctuary’s efforts to protect these gentle creatures. The experience was a reminder of the delicate balance of nature and the importance of preserving it for future generations.

A Hike to Remember

With our hearts full from the sanctuary visit, we headed to a local spot for lunch. The meal was a feast of traditional Costa Rican flavors, with gallo pinto, plantains, and fresh tropical fruits. As we dined, we watched tropical birds feast on fruit, a vibrant display of nature’s beauty.

The final leg of our journey took us to the Rio Celeste Waterfall in Tenorio Volcano National Park. The hike was moderately challenging, but the reward was worth every step. The waterfall was a breathtaking cascade of turquoise water, a natural wonder that left me in awe. Along the way, we encountered a capybara-like creature and a few snakes, a reminder of the wild beauty that Costa Rica has to offer.

Reflecting on the day, I realized that this adventure was more than just a tour; it was a journey into the heart of nature. The Llanos de Cortes experience was a perfect blend of relaxation and exploration, a reminder of the simple joys that come from immersing oneself in the natural world. If you’re ever in Guanacaste, don’t hesitate—book this tour and let the magic of Costa Rica wash over you.
