As the sun began to rise over Hanoi, I found myself nestled comfortably in a luxury limousine, embarking on a day trip to Ninh Binh. The gentle hum of the engine and the promise of adventure ahead reminded me of the countless road trips I took across America in my youth. The open road has always been a place of reflection and discovery for me, and this journey was no different.

Our first stop was the majestic Mua Cave, where nearly 500 stone steps awaited us. The climb was reminiscent of the hikes I used to take with my family, each step bringing a sense of accomplishment and wonder. As I reached the summit, the panoramic view of the countryside and the Ngo Dong River stretched out before me, much like the vast landscapes of the Midwest. The sight was breathtaking, a reminder of the beauty that lies in both the familiar and the foreign.

Our next destination was the Hoa Lu Ancient Capital, a place steeped in history and culture. Walking through the ancient temples dedicated to the Dinh and Le Kings, I felt a connection to the past, much like when I explore the historic towns along Route 66. The stories of feudal dynasties and historical periods in Vietnam were fascinating, offering a glimpse into a world so different from my own yet somehow familiar.

After a brief exploration, we indulged in a delicious buffet lunch featuring local specialties. The flavors were a delightful surprise, reminiscent of the diverse culinary experiences I’ve had on my travels across America. The meal was a celebration of Vietnamese cuisine, with options to suit every palate, much like the diners and roadside eateries I adore back home.

A Serene Voyage

The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the boat ride through Trang An. As we glided along the river in a sampan boat, rowed by a local, I was reminded of the peaceful canoe trips I used to take with my husband. The limestone water caves and lush landscapes were a sight to behold, each turn revealing a new wonder.

Sharing the boat with fellow travelers, I felt a sense of camaraderie, much like the connections formed on the open road. The experience was both exhilarating and serene, a perfect blend of adventure and tranquility.
