Exploring Ninh Binh: Vietnam’s Hidden Gem
Intrigued by the idea of a “Mini Halong Bay,” I embarked on a day trip to Ninh Binh from Hanoi. Join me as I explore breathtaking landscapes, a unique river cruise, and ancient pagodas.
Discovering the “Mini Halong Bay”
When I first heard about Ninh Binh being referred to as the “Mini Halong Bay,” I was intrigued. As a budget traveler, the idea of experiencing the beauty of Ha Long Bay without the hefty price tag of a cruise was too tempting to resist. With limited time in Hanoi, this seemed like the perfect day trip. I joined a small group of fellow travelers, and we set off early in the morning, eager to explore what Ninh Binh had to offer.
Our first stop was the Mua Caves. The climb to the top was no small feat, with over 500 steps to conquer. The last stretch of the climb was particularly challenging, with steep and awkwardly spaced steps. But as I always say, the best views come after the hardest climbs. We took our time, pausing to catch our breath and take in the surroundings. Reaching the summit was a moment of triumph. The panoramic view of Ninh Binh, with its lush landscapes and winding rivers, was absolutely breathtaking. It was a reminder of why I love traveling—those moments when nature leaves you speechless.
A Unique River Cruise Experience
After descending from the Mua Caves, we headed to the Ngo Dong River for a boat trip through Tam Coc. This was unlike any river cruise I had experienced before. We boarded small metal boats, each with a local rower who skillfully navigated the waters using oars. The journey took us through a stunning landscape of limestone mountains and vibrant rice fields. As we glided along the river, we passed through three caves, each with its own unique formations of stalactites hanging from above.
The tranquility of the river, combined with the natural beauty surrounding us, made for a truly memorable experience. It was a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of city life, and I found myself completely immersed in the moment. The entire boat trip lasted about 75 minutes, but it felt like time stood still as we floated through this enchanting landscape.
Cycling to Bich Dong Pagoda
Our adventure didn’t end with the boat trip. We hopped on bicycles and cycled through the picturesque rice fields and charming villages to reach Bich Dong Pagoda. This ancient pagoda, built in 1428, is nestled into the mountainside and offers a serene retreat. The climb to the top of the pagoda was another challenge, but the views from each level were worth every step.
Exploring the pagoda, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of peace and reflection. It was a moment to pause and appreciate the rich history and culture of Vietnam. As we cycled back through the villages, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience such a beautiful part of the world.
Ninh Binh truly lived up to its reputation as a “Mini Halong Bay.” It was a day filled with adventure, stunning landscapes, and cultural discoveries. For anyone looking to experience the beauty of Vietnam on a budget, I highly recommend this Ninh Binh adventure.
