From Waves to Waterways: A Surfer’s Journey on the Panama Canal
Trading my surfboard for a boat ride, I embarked on a journey through the Panama Canal, exploring Monkey Island and fishing in the canal’s rich waters. Join me as I recount a day filled with adventure and unforgettable encounters.
Setting Sail on the Panama Canal
As a seasoned surfer and ocean enthusiast, I’ve spent countless hours riding the waves of Central America. But this time, I traded my surfboard for a boat ride on the legendary Panama Canal. The allure of exploring Monkey Island and the promise of a day filled with adventure was too tempting to resist.
The day began with meeting our guide, Phillipe, whose infectious energy and deep knowledge of the area set the perfect tone for the day. We made a few stops before hitting the water, each adding a unique flavor to the experience. A canal viewpoint offered a glimpse of the massive ships navigating the waters, while a stop at the Gamboa Rainforest Resort provided a refreshing morning beverage with a view that rivaled any beach sunrise. We even stocked up on snacks at a local spot, El Chino, ensuring we were well-prepared for the journey ahead.
Encountering the Wild
Once aboard the pontoon boat, shaded and comfortable, we cruised up the Panama Canal, passing colossal ships that dwarfed our vessel. The anticipation built as we approached Monkey Island, where Phillipe and our captain began calling out to the monkeys. It was a surreal moment when the first troop appeared, curious and unafraid, coming right up to the boat. Cameras clicked as we captured these incredible creatures up close, a rare and unforgettable encounter.
The island was teeming with life, and we were fortunate to spot two more groups of monkeys, each offering a new photo opportunity. It was a reminder of the rich biodiversity that thrives in this part of the world, a stark contrast to the ocean waves I’m used to chasing.
Fishing and Farewell
The adventure didn’t end with the monkeys. We soon found ourselves fishing in the canal, a new experience for this surfer. It wasn’t long before we were reeling in oscars and peacock bass, the thrill of the catch adding to the day’s excitement. Landing a larger peacock bass was the cherry on top, a testament to the abundant life beneath the canal’s surface.
As the day wound down, we enjoyed a leisurely ride back, the sun casting golden hues over the water as we passed the towering ships once more. Reflecting on the day’s events, I realized this was more than just a tour; it was a journey into the heart of Panama’s natural and man-made wonders. Phillipe’s warmth and expertise made it all the more memorable, leaving me with a sense of gratitude and a desire to return.
For those seeking a break from the surf and a taste of Panama’s unique offerings, I can’t recommend this experience enough. It’s a day that promises adventure, connection with nature, and memories that will last a lifetime. Until the next wave calls, this is one adventure I’ll cherish.
