• Parque del Estrecho de Magallanes - Also known as the Strait Park, it was established in 1843 when the government showed a keen interest in the Strait of Magellan and its surrounding lands. A one-hour drive south from Punta Arenas allows us to observe the landscape’s relief, with stunning views formed by the waters of the Strait of Magellan, Tierra del Fuego Island, and Dawson Island, all significant in our history. We pass through small settlements where families from Punta Arenas have built intriguing places initially intended for weekend retreats, but extended stays due to the landscape’s beauty. This excursion also offers bird-watching opportunities. At the Fort, a historical tour is available, and for those interested, a viewpoint can be accessed by walking through native flora.
• Museo del Estrecho - This is a fascinating place for those eager to learn or recall what they were taught in school. The museum presents maritime history from its origins, highlighting explorers who navigated the seas and passed through this crucial Strait before the Panama Canal’s opening. It was a necessary route to avoid Cape Horn, known as a graveyard for ships worldwide. Today, a monument to the albatross honors those who attempted the crossing but did not survive the harsh climatic conditions.
• Cementerio Municipal - Proudly considered a National Monument, the Magellanics describe it as one of the most beautiful cemeteries globally. A tour through the lovely cypress avenues and mausoleums offers travelers the chance to capture stunning souvenir images. The diverse nationalities represented reflect the beginnings of Sandy Point, later known as Punta Arenas, which became a cosmopolitan city with residents from around the world and newspapers published in various languages in the early 1900s.
• Nao Victoria Museo - A must-visit for every traveler, the Nao Victoria Museum features life-size replicas of significant vessels in maritime history, including one of the five ships from Hernando de Magellan’s expedition, the Nao Victoria. Moving forward in time, the museum showcases the Beagle, a Cherokee-class ship known for its navigation, built to explore and gather data on Patagonia’s flora, fauna, geology, and indigenous tribes. The James Caird boat, constructed by Ernest Shackleton’s crew, is also featured, with its fascinating story shared during the tour, leaving visitors eager to learn more about Patagonia. Finally, the replica of the Goleta Ancud, built in Chile to claim the Strait of Magellan in 1843, is displayed.
• Plaza Armas Punta Arenas - On the return to the pier, the final stop includes a tour around the monument to the discoverer of the Canal de Todos los Santos, named after Hernando de Magallanes, later known as the Strait of Magellan. An interesting explanation is provided about the construction style of the buildings in this square, many of which are neoclassical, designed by French architects as residences for wealthy regional families, such as the Braun Palace and the Montes Palace, now home to the Illustrious Municipality of Punta Arenas.
