Parque Pinguino Rey - We have the opportunity to visit the King Penguin Reserve on our way to Lago Deseado. If it doesn’t align with their schedule, we will visit on our return to Punta Arenas. The King Penguin Reserve in Tierra del Fuego is a remarkable site where over a hundred of these magnificent birds can be seen in their natural environment. Guided tours are provided by knowledgeable hosts who share insights about these incredible penguins. The tours are designed to minimize human impact, ensuring the penguins are not disturbed, especially during egg incubation or when there are new chicks.
Inútil Bay - The first glimpse of Bahia Inutil, historically named “Useless Bay,” reflects the shallow waters of the Strait of Magellan, which were unexpectedly shallow for early navigators. The vastness of the bay offers little shelter from the area’s strong winds.
Lago Deseado - In the afternoon, after witnessing breathtaking views of endless pampas, sheep, ranches, and sailing the Strait of Magellan, we arrive at the spectacular Lago Deseado, surrounded by pristine lakes in Tierra del Fuego.
Lago Deseado Excursions as Desired
Lago Deseado - At this incredible lodge, various activities are available, including fishing for rainbow and brown trout in Lake Deseado. Hiking through the woods to a stunning waterfall, touring other lakes with vibrant colors, and exploring the Cordillera by van are also options.
Full Day Lago Deseado Timaukel Tierra del Fuego and Caleta Maria
Lago Deseado - Today, we may travel together in a van to Lake Fagnano, Rassmussen, and the Natural Reserve Parque Karunkinka to capture photos of guanacos and enjoy breathtaking lookouts. Sheep ranching activities are also available.
Lago Deseado Punta Arenas
Cerro Sombrero - Departing in the morning for Punta Arenas, we take an alternative route through Cerro Sombrero, a small village of ENAP workers, the National Oil Company established in Tierra del Fuego since 1945. Another ferry ride offers shorter distances but spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean, reminiscent of the views Ferdinand Magellan experienced in 1520 during his journey along the Strait of Magellan to the Pacific Ocean.
Estancia San Gregorio - We will pass by Estancia San Gregorio, part of the Sociedad Explotadora Tierra del Fuego. A photo stop provides an excellent introduction to the local history and the significance of the sheep farming industry in Patagonia, which is vital to both Chile and Argentina.
