Floating Through Paradise: A Surfer’s Escape on the Peñas Blancas River
Trading my surfboard for a paddle, I embarked on the Peñas Blancas River Safari Float in San Ramón. This tranquil journey through lush forests, teeming with wildlife, offered a refreshing change of pace from my usual surf adventures.
Setting Sail on the Peñas Blancas
As a seasoned surfer, I’m always on the lookout for new adventures that take me off the beaten path. So when I heard about the Peñas Blancas River Safari Float in San Ramón, I knew it was time to trade my surfboard for a paddle and explore the tranquil waters of the Frío River. The promise of a peaceful float through lush forests, teeming with wildlife, was too tempting to resist.
The day began with an early morning pickup from the tour’s downtown office. The storefront was a bit tricky to find, tucked away with minimal signage, but the friendly staff made up for it. Our driver and two guides, including the ever-enthusiastic Diego, welcomed us with warm smiles and a quick briefing on what to expect. The drive to the river was a scenic 30-minute journey, peppered with interesting tidbits about the local area.
Upon arrival, we were given a moment to stretch our legs and use the facilities while the guides prepared the boats. Fitted with life jackets and armed with water bottles, we were ready to embark on our river adventure. The anticipation was palpable as we set off, the gentle current guiding us into the heart of the forest.
A Symphony of Nature
Floating down the Peñas Blancas River was like stepping into a living, breathing postcard. The dense canopy of ficus and kapok trees formed a natural tunnel overhead, their branches intertwined with lianas and epiphytes. The air was filled with the symphony of nature – the rustle of leaves, the distant call of a howler monkey, and the occasional splash of a turtle slipping into the water.
Our guide, Diego, was a fountain of knowledge, pointing out the various species that call this river home. We were lucky enough to spot a sloth lazily hanging from a branch, its slow movements a stark contrast to the lively chatter of the capuchin monkeys swinging above. Iguanas basked on sun-dappled rocks, while vibrant birds flitted through the trees, their colors a striking contrast against the verdant backdrop.
The river was blissfully uncrowded, with only a couple of other boats in the distance. It felt as though we had the entire river to ourselves, a private audience with the wonders of the rainforest. Diego’s enthusiasm was infectious, and he made sure we had the best vantage points for capturing the perfect shot with our camera.
A Taste of Costa Rica
After about 90 minutes of floating through this natural paradise, we reached our endpoint. A charming riverside restaurant awaited us, offering a taste of local flavors. We were treated to refreshing drinks, yucca bread, fried plantains, and local cheese – a delightful end to our river journey.
As we relaxed and enjoyed our meal, the guides efficiently cleaned up the gear, allowing us to soak in the serene surroundings. The restaurant’s open-air setting provided the perfect vantage point to watch the local birds, adding another layer of tranquility to the experience.
Reflecting on the day, the Peñas Blancas River Safari Float was a refreshing change of pace from my usual surf-centric adventures. It was a reminder of the diverse beauty that Costa Rica has to offer, beyond its world-class waves. Whether you’re a fellow surfer looking for a day off the board or a nature enthusiast seeking a peaceful escape, this tour is a must-do. The combination of wildlife, stunning scenery, and local hospitality made it one of my favorite experiences in Costa Rica.
