Trading Waves for Wildlife: A Tranquil Float Down Peñas Blancas River
In search of a break from the ocean’s roar, I embarked on a tranquil float down the Peñas Blancas River in San Ramón. The serene journey through the lush jungle, guided by the knowledgeable Dionis, offered a unique glimpse into Costa Rica’s vibrant wildlife and left me with a renewed appreciation for nature’s tranquility.
A Serene Start to the Day
As a professional surfer, I’m always on the lookout for the next big wave, but sometimes, even I need a break from the ocean’s roar. That’s why, on a recent trip to San Ramón, I decided to trade my surfboard for a raft and embark on the Peñas Blancas River Safari Float. The idea of a tranquil float down the river, surrounded by the lush Costa Rican jungle, was too tempting to resist.
The morning of the float was perfect—clear skies and a gentle breeze. Our guide, Dionis, and driver, Johnny, greeted us with warm smiles and an infectious enthusiasm for the day’s adventure. As we set off towards the river, Dionis suddenly pulled over, pointing out a sloth nestled in a hedge. It was a rare sight, as sloths usually hang out high in the trees. We snapped some photos, keeping a respectful distance as the sloth eyed us curiously.
Floating Through Nature’s Canvas
Once on the river, the world seemed to slow down. The raft glided silently over the water, the only sounds being the gentle splash of Dionis’s paddle and the distant calls of howler monkeys. The Peñas Blancas River is a haven for wildlife, and we were lucky to have it all to ourselves that morning.
Dionis, a naturalist guide with an uncanny ability to spot even the most camouflaged creatures, pointed out monkeys swinging through the trees and a variety of birds flitting about. His knowledge of the ecosystem was impressive, and his passion for the environment was contagious. At one point, he even mimicked a howler monkey call, and to our delight, a nearby monkey responded. It was a magical moment that highlighted the connection between humans and nature.
A Taste of Local Hospitality
As our float came to an end, we were treated to a delightful snack at a local farmhouse. The hospitality of the Costa Rican people never ceases to amaze me, and this was no exception. We enjoyed fresh fruit and traditional snacks, savoring the flavors of the region.
Reflecting on the experience, I realized that the Peñas Blancas River Safari Float was more than just a peaceful escape from the waves. It was a reminder of the beauty and tranquility that can be found in nature, even away from the ocean. For anyone looking to experience the serene side of Costa Rica, I highly recommend this adventure. It’s a chance to slow down, connect with nature, and appreciate the simple joys of life.
